AP Classes Prepare Students for College

While the skyrocketing costs of attending college continue to push parents and students to acquire as many dual credits as possible, it is important to look at how dual credits impact students’ success once they attend college. In January of 2019, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE) commissioned a report called “Early College Credit.” Their research shows that “AP-only students still tend to outperform dual credit-only students overall…” (p. 13). The report reluctantly admits that “…while AP and priority dual credit students are equally as likely to enroll in college, AP students may be better prepared academically” (p. 14). Their research data is clear that AP students are better prepared academically.

This data encourages MSDWC to maintain our healthy balance of offering AP and dual credit courses to meet each student’s unique needs. Our goal when working with college-bound students is twofold. First, we want to prepare students to succeed in college. Second, we want to save them money by helping them complete college course requirements in high school that would be outside of their majors. Working toward this vision has led both Northfield and Southwood High Schools to be honored with recognition as great schools.

In 2022, 76 MSD Wabash students enrolled in at least one AP course and earned over 90 college credits through Advanced Placement exams.

AP Scholars

Granted to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams.

- Kayden Cruz (Class of 2022)

- Madison Hunter (Class of 2022) - earned a 5 (perfect score) on at least one exam

- Bryn Mealy (Class of 2023)

- Katelyn Ranck (Class of 2023)

AP Scholar with Distinction

Granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.

- Kyle Wynn (Class of 2022) - earned a 5 (perfect score) on at least one exam
